What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient practice originating in India that comprises eight limbs.

In the contemporary Western tradition, we tend to only think of the movement-based practice of yoga: the asanas.

However, there are seven other branches of the practice, including breathwork, meditation, and even our attitude towards ourselves and others.

Benefits of Yoga

#1 Improves Flexibility

Almost all yoga positions stretch your body in some way, lengthening the muscles and tendons, as well as widening the range of motion in your joints. Beginner practitioners often feel inadequate or unwelcome due to their lack of flexibility, but this should not be a reason to prevent you from trying yoga. In fact, if you think you lack flexibility, yoga is the perfect activity for you!

#2 Builds Strength

Yoga is a gentle way to build strength in your entire body. A regular yoga practice of even 20 minutes can increase strength in your arms, legs, and core, without the hard impact on the joints that you might feel from other sports or types of exercise. Not everyone comes to yoga to build strength, and luckily there is a wide range of styles to choose from - some soft and restorative, and others quite physically demanding.

#3 Encourages Self-Care

All exercise and movement is a form of self-care, and will likely impact your lifestyle positively. Yoga is even more powerful as a tool for personal well being because it incorporates meditation and breathwork into the physical practice. This helps quiet the mind, connect the breath and body, and ground the practitioner in the present moment. All of these factors combined can bring a greater feeling of inner-peace.
